Dispatched from Filton, Bristol on the 23rd of November 1949, 400/1/632 like many other Bristol 400’s was heading for Commonwealth Motors in Melbourne, Australia. The original owner of the 400 in Australia owned the car for some 18 years until he sadly passed away leaving the car standing idle for 5 years until 1973 400/1/632 was purchased by Les Nicholson who found the car advertised in a Melbourne paper of the time. It is said he had a substantial collection of Bristol’s which included 2 Bristol 402’s, 403 & a 405, quite the collection! Mr Nicholson carried out various recommissioning works to the car then a year later Mr Greg Daly became the new custodian using the car initially everyday from 1974-late 1976.

Fast forward to 1990 Mr Daly moved to Cowra, Australia along with his beloved Bristol. Some years later in 2007 the 400 was sold to Mr Greg Mead of Sydney, the 400 then showing 59,000 miles. Following some years of lack of use in the ownership if Mr Daly the 400 had a new lease of life carrying out various club events including the Noosa National Rally.

In 2010 the car had the gearbox completely rebuilt along with having a modern type clutch fitted for the WA Run. 2016 saw the engine completely rebuilt by a marque specialist in Australia.

Out of all the Bristol models the 400 was the most successful in motorsport to name a few achievements the Type 400 accomplished:

1st POLISH RALLY – Winning the 2-litre class and gaining the highest points. 1948

1st OF ALL BRITISH ENTRIES – MONTE CARLO RALLY. 1949

3rd IN GERNERAL CLASSIFICATION – MONTE CARLO RALLY. 1949

92MPH over 100 kilometres officially timed at MONTLHERY TRACK

The current owner saw the 400 advertised on a international classic car website and couldn’t resist so a deal was negotiated and the 400 was soon on a ship heading towards the UK where he took delivery in December 2017. Much work has been carried out since arrival which is all present in the considerable history file that accompanies the car.
