HISTORY. There appears to be no doubt that this car was originally Sir George White's

personal car as Chairman of the Bristol Aircraft Corporation with the registration BAC 1.

records are not helpful, although the Bristol Owners Club have supplied some evidence of ownerships when out of the UK. A plaque on the dashboard indicates that the car took part in the Silverstone Silver Jubilee meeting on 24th August 1974.

Vredenstein Sprint Classics, are 600x16 rather than the standard 550 x 16.This needs to be checked in good light outside the car's present garage including the speed rating.

The change makes sense in view of the greater performance potential.

ENGINE. The head, block and sump are those of the original 85A engine, but the

internals have been upgraded in many respects so that the result is akin to one of the highly developed competition versions. A gross 150 bhp has been measured.

The car has three downdraught solex carbs which were a common option.

"One Shot" lubrication is still in place and a modern by-pass oil filter has been fitted. TRANSMISSION. The car has been fitted with a "close ratio" gearbox supplied by the factory. I have seen no evidence that the rear axle has been modified.

UPHOLSTERY. The car has been completely re-upholstered copying the original interior.
It is not clear whether the carpets are new but they are in good condition.

BODY. This has been taken down to bare metal, renovated, new steel wings fitted, and then very well repainted in a red which could be described as maroon.

SUMMARY.

The car looks very smart with fine paintwork and interior.

Mechanically a great deal of upgrading and refurbishment has been done, producing a car with far greater power than the production type 85 engine when first made.

Some aspects of the interior below the dash and in the boot could be better presented (or perhaps removed] as earlier modifications no longer in use.

These small improvements would make a first rate car with outstanding early history and exceptional performance potential, matched only by later competition versions of the Bristol 2 litre engine.
